A MESSAGE FROM JIM DINOVO, OWNER

When I was a kid, I spent summer weekends in Albany, New York working with my Grampa (James DiNovo) and Grandma (Eleanor DiNovo) in their Greenhouse.   My sister and I spent hours filling all of the empty flats with soil and little seeds.  After a hard day’s work, Grampa would squash a tomato and rub it in our hands to wash off the dirt.  From those days forward, gardening always inspired me.

Another form of expression that inspired me was art.  My mother, Karen DiNovo, is a talented artist who specializes in portraiture and is inspired by still life, wildlife and landscapes. Mom showed me the basics of art and artistic media.  
When it was time to choose a career, I knew it had to provide a balance between gardening and art.  Landscape Architecture seemed like the perfect choice.

In the Landscape Architecture studio at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, I met my now wife and Registered Landscape Architect, Jennifer.  Jennifer (Tomich) DiNovo comes from a family of landscape enthusiasts.   Jennifer’s grandfather, Matthew Tomich (Grandad), is a Registered Landscape Architect who started his own business, Tomich Landscape Design, in 1957. Along with Grandad, Jennifer’s father (Christopher Tomich) and Uncles hold degrees in landscape architecture/contracting.  Jennifer followed in her father’s footsteps at UMASS, Amherst, where she even shared some of the same professors from 20+ years earlier.   Today, Tomich Landscape Design, Inc. is one of the most sought-after landscape design companies in western Massachusetts and the Berkshires.

Love for the landscape, gardening and art comes easy when it’s in your blood; but in addition to this love, comes hard work.  Hard work was instilled in us by our families from when we were children. Whether it be picking up a shovel or laying down a brick, our family takes pride in the product it produces and finds joy in our clients’ joy of their landscape.

Merging two families together to practice Landscape Architecture and construction has created a strong foundation for a third-generation design/build landscape practice.   Today, my company Design Works is family-owned and operated out of Southern, NH.  We’d like to extend our thanks to our families for the inspiration to practice landscape architecture, construction, and art.
