Our Team

Jim DiNovo, ASLA, President Jim DinovoJim is a New Hampshire native and a 1998 graduate of Londonderry High School. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture. He founded Design Works in 2006 and has nearly 20 years of experience in designing, building and managing residential and commercial landscape projects. Jim’s skill is unique in that he has the ability to generate plans for the most simplistic and stylish front walkways to the most intricate backyard pool designs and patio spaces, and then build them well. Under his leadership, the Design Works Team has won awards including Gold in the “outdoor living space” and “landscape design” categories from the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of New Hampshire and has been featured in the Belgard Hardscapes Catalogue. As Design Works steadily grows each and every year, Jim’s passion and dedication to his clients and the field of Landscape Architecture and construction grows with it.

“My passion for the landscape and hard work began as a child, when my sister and I spent summer weekends in Albany, New York working with our Grampa and Grandma in their family Greenhouse. We would spend hours filling empty flats with soil and seeds. After a hard day’s work, Grampa would squash a tomato and rub it our hands to wash off the dirt. Gardening inspired me. Later in life, my love for the garden translated into my love for plants and what they are capable of in many different environments. My career was also initially inspired by my mom, Karen DiNovo. She is a talented artist who specializes in portraiture inspired by still life, wildlife and landscapes. Being a witness to her craft taught me the basics of art and artistic media. Naturally, when it was time to choose a career, I knew it had to provide a balance between gardening and art. Landscape Architecture has been the perfect outlet. I feel fortunate to be able to draft up creative landscape designs and to use my many years of construction experience to do a really good job building our client’s vision.”

Jennifer DiNovo, ASLA, PLA, Principal Jen DinovoJennifer is a third-generation Landscape Architect with 10+ years of experience in landscape design and construction, site planning, permitting, graphics, and regional planning. She has extensive experience in planting design, general landscape architectural and engineering processes, site and land use planning, local government regulations and permitting, and working with the public and municipal offices. She is also skilled in applying computer design technologies to present graphics that aid her client’s visualization of designs/understanding of realistic site constraints.

Jennifer actively volunteers on the Executive Board of Directors for the Granite State Landscape Architects. Jennifer’s career outside of design-build includes 7 years working as a landscape architect at a multidisciplinary firm in Southborough, MA, 2 years working as a regional planner for a Regional Planning Commission, an internship at a well-known landscape architecture firm in Boston, and landscape construction experience in the Berkshires.

“My love for the landscape stems from a whole family of landscape enthusiasts. Currently, I collaborate at Design Works with my husband, Jim DiNovo, my brother, Adam Tomich, and our talented team. Working in a family business comes natural to me because I grew up learning and appreciating the landscape craft from my granddad (registered LA), dad, and uncles. As a youngster, I had the pleasure of sitting on Grandad’s lap at his drawing table and having my dad quiz me on the latin names of trees as we’d walk along hiking trails. As a teenager, I worked with the boys doing construction and learning about the characteristics of specific plants, natural stone patios, installing lighting, irrigation, etc. And as a young adult, I followed in my dad’s footsteps by obtaining a BSA degree in Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning Program from UMass Amherst in 2005, where I even shared some of his professors from 20+ years earlier. These days, Jimmy and I love spending a lot of time working in our own garden and exploring the White Mountains with our daughters and son.”
