North Hampton Landscape Design & Backyard Transformation
When this North Hampton, NH homeowner came to us, they had a big vision for their property. Rather than trying to tackle everything at once, they wanted a comprehensive landscape design that could be completed in phases over time. The goal was to create a cohesive outdoor environment that felt intentional from the front of the property to the backyard, while making the overall investment more manageable.
Our job was to take that larger vision and break it down into a practical, phased plan that would bring the entire property together over time.
The first step was design. For a project of this scale, planning every area together is essential, even when construction happens over several years. Each phase needs to work on its own while contributing to the larger vision. We developed a plan that allowed the homeowner to move forward at a comfortable pace without losing sight of the finished result.

We started with the front plantings, establishing the landscape's first impression and creating a foundation for the rest of the property. From there, we moved to the side patio and walkways, improving access and creating natural connections between different areas. Each phase added another layer to the overall design, allowing the property to evolve without feeling like a collection of separate projects.
The backyard was the next major step. We created a spacious paver patio anchored by a custom outdoor fireplace, giving the homeowner a comfortable place to gather, entertain, and enjoy the outdoors. The fireplace serves as a focal point, adding warmth and character while extending the use of the space into cooler evenings.
The surrounding patio provides plenty of room for seating and entertaining, with the layout designed to feel open and connected to the landscape beyond.
One of the biggest challenges was working with the property's natural elevation. Rather than treating the sloped terrain as an obstacle, we used grading, retaining walls, and substantial landscape steps to create structure and make the different levels accessible.

The retaining walls define the patio and planting areas, while broad, natural-looking steps connect the lower entertaining space to the upper garden. These transitions do more than solve a practical problem. They create a sense of movement through the property and make the landscape feel like a series of connected outdoor spaces.
The planting design brings color, texture, and softness to the stonework. Layered garden beds feature a mix of flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, and shrubs, creating a naturalistic look that changes throughout the growing season. Purple, pink, and golden-yellow blooms stand out against the surrounding greenery, while the varied heights and textures keep the gardens visually interesting. The result is a landscape that feels established and inviting rather than overly formal.
Lighting was another important part of the project. Integrated lights within the retaining walls highlight the stonework and provide a warm glow along the patio. Modern path lights illuminate the walkways and steps, helping guide movement through the property after sunset. These details allow the landscape to take on a different character in the evening, making the outdoor spaces feel just as inviting after dark as they do during the day.

Beyond the visible features, the project also incorporated irrigation to support the planting areas, along with the grading and site preparation needed to bring everything together. Coordinating these elements with the hardscape and planting installation was essential to creating a finished landscape that functions as well as it looks.
What makes this North Hampton landscape especially rewarding is the process behind it. Over three years, we worked through each phase of the original plan, from the front plantings to the side patio and walkways, and finally to the expansive backyard living area.
Because the project was planned as a whole from the beginning, each addition felt like a natural continuation of the last. The homeowner could invest in the property over time while working toward a clear, unified result.
The finished landscape brings together stonework, thoughtful planting design, outdoor living features, and carefully placed lighting to create a property that feels complete from every angle. What began as a large vision became a series of manageable steps, each one moving the project closer to its full potential.

Projects like this are a great example of why we believe landscape design should come before construction. A phased approach doesn't mean compromising on the final vision. With the right plan, it means creating a landscape that grows with the homeowner's priorities and budget, while ensuring every phase contributes to the bigger picture.
