DW Project Review: Cozy Outdoor Living in Londonderry, NH

Some properties tell you exactly what they want to be, if you are willing to listen. This landscape in Londonderry, NH was one of them.

At first glance, the challenge was obvious. A steep slope, limited usable space, and a backyard that felt difficult to access rather than inviting. For many homeowners, a yard like this becomes something you look at from a distance instead of something you use. Our goal was to change that without forcing the land to be something it was not.

At Design Works, we believe the most successful landscapes are inspired by their surroundings. Instead of flattening the site or fighting the grade, we leaned into it. The slope became the backbone of the design.

A beautiful slate colored stone was used to create a series of steps that guide you gently down through the property. These steps do more than move you from one elevation to another. They create a sense of progression and comfort, offering subtle separation as you descend while still feeling open and connected to the landscape around you.

The stone selection was intentional. Natural textures and tones allow the hardscape to feel settled and familiar, as if it has always belonged there. Over time, these materials will only become more beautiful, blending further into the setting rather than standing apart from it.

Planting beds were layered along either side of the steps to soften the structure and anchor it into the hillside. This balance between stone and plant material is what makes the space feel natural instead of engineered. It slows the experience down and creates moments of interest at every turn.

Lighting played a critical role in how this landscape functions. Carefully placed lighting accents allow the space to be used comfortably during the evening while maintaining a calm, understated atmosphere. The goal was not brightness, but confidence. Clear footing, gentle illumination, and a space that feels just as welcoming at night as it does during the day.

Seasonality was also a major consideration. This landscape needed to feel good year round, not just during peak summer months. Stone steps provide stability and durability through New England weather, while the planting design ensures structure and visual interest even as the seasons change.

What makes this project special is how natural it feels. The transitions are smooth. The scale feels right. Nothing appears forced. It truly feels like the landscape was there when the house was built, simply waiting to be revealed.

This Londonderry, NH project is a reminder that limitations often hold the greatest potential. When slope, elevation, and terrain are treated as assets rather than obstacles, the result is a landscape that feels authentic, comfortable, and deeply connected to its setting.
