This Westford, MA project started with a simple but important question: How do you actually want to live in this space? Not what features look good on paper, but how the backyard would be used day to day, weekend to weekend, season after season.
That question shaped everything.
From the beginning, our approach in Westford, MA was less about building individual elements and more about designing an experience. Yes, the space includes a custom waterfall with a retaining wall, a bold square fire pit, and an expansive pool patio. But those features only work because of how they relate to one another, and how people move through the space.
The waterfall creates a visual anchor and adds sound and motion, grounding the entire layout. The retaining wall does more than manage grade. It defines space, frames views, and creates subtle separation without closing anything off. This allowed the pool patio to feel open and social while still feeling intentional and comfortable.
One of the most important parts of this project happened after the hardscape was designed. We worked closely with the client to select and place outdoor furniture that fit both the scale of the space and the way they entertain. Furniture was not an afterthought. It was part of the design.
Where people sit, how they face one another, where pathways naturally form, these details matter. By planning furniture placement early, we ensured clear flow, comfortable conversation areas, and no awkward dead zones. The result is a backyard that feels easy to use, not staged.
This is where the difference between landscape architecture and basic landscaping becomes clear. At Design Works, we work with fundamentals like use, harmony, and flow. We design for movement, gathering, and everyday enjoyment. The goal is not just a beautiful space, but a functional one that feels natural the moment you step into it.
In this Westford, MA project, that philosophy resulted in an outdoor living area that feels balanced and welcoming. The fire pit becomes a natural gathering point. The pool patio supports both quiet afternoons and lively evenings. Every element works together, not just visually, but practically.
We believe landscapes should support living, not just impress from a distance. This project is a perfect example of what happens when design is centered around how people actually use their space. It is not just built to look good. It is built to be lived in, and that is at the heart of everything we do.
